2023: The Recap

Meshi Taka and Carl Hodgson

By Meshi Taka

The festive season is upon us.

As most gear up for the holiday season, we are taking a moment to reflect on 2023 which is almost at an end.

Looking Back on 2023

We developed our first visualisation model to show the complex factors  below the surface that are influencing groundwater movement and in turn flooding. A short demonstration is provided in the video below.

*PS: Project Groundwater Northumbria (PGN) is  investigating groundwater flood risk, specifically the interaction and influence of mine workings across several sites in the Northumbria region.*

In addition to the ongoing research, we officially launched  in April 2023; this coincided with this website going live.

In June 2023, we exhibited at the national Flood and Coast conference which was very well received.

In July 2023, PGN led a transformative  innovation sprint during the NWG Innovation Festival.

We brought in a specialist contractor to undertake borehole drilling works at the end of the summer at three sites across Gateshead. The borehole drilling works which have been recently completed will be followed by discrete groundwater level monitoring.

This undertaking will enable us to gather real-time data which will support the ongoing development of new groundwater mapping, and a forecasting and warning system.

We’ve rounded up some more highlights in the video below.

Coming Soon

It has been in the pipeline for quite some time now and we are over the moon to finally share that our brand new podcast will be here very soon.

The first episode of The PGN Podcast will be freely available to watch and/or listen to from Friday 22 December 2023  (Spotify and YouTube on our channels).

Just in time to see out 2023! We are very much looking forward to hearing your feedback.

On behalf the entire PGN team, we extend our deepest thanks for your support; and our heartfelt wishes for a joyous holiday season and a new year filled with happiness.

Thank you for reading.
