In November 2020, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) launched an exciting opportunity for local innovation, inviting lead local flood authorities (LLFAs) to apply for funding through the Flood & Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme (FCRIP). This initiative aimed to unite local authorities, businesses, and communities in a collaborative effort to discover and implement innovative solutions to enhance flood resilience in their areas.
Gateshead Council’s LLFA team seized this opportunity, successfully preparing and submitting a bid, which led to the creation of Project Groundwater Northumbria (PGN) in 2021. Proudly, PGN stands as one of the twenty-five groundbreaking projects sponsored by FCRIP, paving the way for a more resilient future.
The project is undertaking research and development on groundwater, its interactions with shallow mine workings, and the associated flood risks in the North East, focusing on study areas in Gateshead, Newcastle, and Berwick.
This project will conclude in 2027.
Project Groundwater Northumbria is revolutionising groundwater management! Cutting-edge modelling techniques are being developed, and innovative partnership models—rooted in the region's rich mining history—are being brought to life. Alongside this, it is fantastic to see the suite of national groundwater content in order to grow the nation’s capability and capacity to support a climate resilient future.
